Oracle says next version of enterprise Java received Java Community Process executive approval; reference implementation due soon
By Paul Krill | InfoWorld
The next version of enterprise Java has received Java Community Process executive approval, according to an Oracle blog post on Tuesday.
As a follow-up, the Java EE (Enterprise Edition) 7 reference implementation, put out as the GlassFish application server, is due in the next couple of weeks, said Linda DeMichiel, who has served as a Java specification lead, in a blog posting. The Java EE 7 Platform and Web Profile JSR (Java Specification Request) has passed the JCP Executive Committee Final Approval Ballot. "This completes the JCP approval process for all of the JSRs under the Java EE 7 Profile," DeMichiel wrote.
Highlighted in Java EE 7 are batch capabilities, WebSocket, JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), and concurrency utilities for asynchronous applications. Fourteen JSRs are connected to Java EE 7, including Concurrency Utilities for Java, Java Persistence 2.1, Java Servlet 3.1, JavaServer Faces 2.0, and Java Message Service 2.0.
Also part of Java EE 7 are nine MRs (maintenance releases), including Web Services for Java EE 1.4, JavaServer Pages 2.3, and Common Annotations for Java Platform 1.2.
Another capability that had been slated for Java EE 7, the JCache standard caching API, has been deleted from the Java EE 7 feature list. It is expected to be a candidate for Java EE 8, planned for 2015.
Oracle has had trouble lately meeting its ambitious features goals for enterprise and standard editions of Java. The standard edition of Java 8, which had been due this year, is now expected to be ready next year.
